So..
Today i have been without my beloved internet because of the error mentioned below. When i got back from school i decided to give ubuntu one last try before i went insane. I googled my way to a solution which seemed okay. My friends at school, who had helped me solving this problem, took the #1 result on google – and this was their first mistake. I am not kidding, when i say, that it was the #2 result on google, that actually helped me! I am going to make the troubleshooting below, but before that, you kids have to hear the lesson of the day: “Have friends help you, thank them – then do it all over, the right way, by yourself!”
I want to say thanks to Johannes, Dennis, Jonaz and Frank who was by my side, when i collapsed in despair. A special thanks to Johannes who took time out of his busy schedule to help me, even though there was no positive result!
Troubleshooting:
- My Broadcom Network Card is not supported by Ubuntu (as standard)
- My Broadcom Network Card-driver is not in the “Hardware Driver” category
HOW TO FIX:
- Boot up Ubuntu 9.10
- Insert the Live CD (Installation CD) when on the desktop
- Click “System”
- Click “Administration”
- Click “Synaptic Package Manager”
- Go to “Settings”
- Click “Repositories”
- Mark “Check the installable from cd”
- Go back to “Synaptic Package Manager”
- Search for: “bcmwl-kernel-source”
- Mark for installation
- “Apply”
- Reboot!
Simple as Trig

Once again ubuntu failed on me. After the new upgrade to 9.10 the broadcom network card is no longer supported. Some of the cards are not supported at all, other is just not supported as standard. Several fixes have been posted, but at this point i am back to my backup-copy of ***dows. I really hate doing this and i hate using ***dows, but let me asure you, this is only a temporary solution to my problem. The poll about what new type of Ubuntu i am going to use is still going good. Submit your opinion in the poll in the last post or in a comment below.
Do i hate not being able to complain about free and opensource software when it doesn’t work? YES! Do i have to wait and be patient? Seems like it.
If you haven’t noticed my friend Frank has made his own blog, check it out – link is in the blogroll!
Have a good day
– Sommer

Finally danish television, Danmarks Radio (Danish Radio, trans.), understood a very important thing. ***dows is NOT the only platform in the world of computers. Just recently they have begun to stream their videos in what they call a “BETA”, but what is really just a VLC and Quicktime-stream. This means that Linux and Mac owners can now watch the episodes from the TV, just like ***dows owners can on their website. This is a guide to make the Linux version work.
Some people might have the luck to do it directly from their website, but if you are unable to do this and still want to watch something when you are not near a television, please follow these steps:
(Please note: DR1 is a licensed tv-channel from Denmark, if you do not have this channel on your tv at home, you are not allowed to stream the feed, even if you are able to! This post do NOT encourage piracy!)
1. Download VLC media player
a. Go to http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ and press the “Download”-link that fits the operating system you are using.
or
b. Search for “VLC” in “Add/Remove” on linux, mark and install.
2. Open VLC media player
a. Press “Media”
and
b. Choose “Network Stream”
and
c. In the dropdown box you choose “rtsp”
and
d. In the “Address” bar you type in either:
“rtsp://streamer-01.dr.nordija.dk/dr1high” for DR1 High Quality
“rtsp://streamer-01.dr.nordija.dk/dr1low” for DR1 Low Quality
“rtsp://streamer-01.dr.nordija.dk/dr2high” for DR2 High Quality
“rtsp://streamer-01.dr.nordija.dk/dr2low” for DR2 Low Quality
and
e. Press “Play”
The player should start streaming the feed within the next couple of seconds. If you are not sure if you can stream the High Quality version here is a pointer about what connection you should have if you want a smooth stream:
- High: 1000 kbs
- Low: 300 kbs
For the Mac tutorial or FAQ go to the official post from DR1!

Ubuntu haven’t failed on me yet and I love it. Many people won’t use Ubuntu because it’s not a perfect system, but as a user of the system I usually say: “What system is perfect?” In many cases it’s not ubuntu, but the “ubuntu-compatible” programs that are buggy. (and in all cases Ubuntu is better than ***dows, ye’ can call me a fanboy, yes!)
Songbird is a great program for synchronizing music from your computer into one library – or even to an Ipod! The Ubuntu-compatible version have a serious bugg tho’. If your computer is using a Nvidia graphic-card (which seems to be the one working best with Ubuntu at the moment), you have to remove the “libvisual-0.4-plugins package”. As also seen when downloading the .deb.
Troubleshooting is easy!
- Songbird won’t start
- Songbird process freezes
- You are using a Nvidia graphic-card
These things happened, and applied to my system, when I tried to run songbird after having installed it. I fixed it just as easily as I installed it. Follow these steps and songbird will sure run as a dream!
- Click “System”‘
- Go to “Administration”
- Click “Synaptic Package Manager”
- Type in your Password
- Look for “Quick Search”
- Type in “libvisual-0.4-plugins”
- The application will search for the plugin-package
- Find “libvisual-0.4-plugins”
- Click the square just on the left of the ubuntu icon
- Click “Mark for Removal”
- Click “Apply”
- Close “Synaptic Package Manager”
- Restart your system and run songbird!
As easy as that! If you have other problems, post a comment and i will try to answer!

So the other day, ***dows had trouble starting (o’rly?), a corrupt update caused the computer to freeze in the update-process. Since i no longer could log onto my ***dows partition i reformatted and installed ubuntu once more. LOSEDOWS FTL!

I’ve had ubuntu 9.04 on my labtop for about a week now. I really enjoy ubuntu, it’s functions and it’s layout. The only thing i miss, is World of Warcraft. At first i had an ubuntu dualboot with a partition of 20 gb, but since ubuntu requires around 5 gb itself, there wasn’t enough space for World of Warcraft. The only thing i could do, was to format my labtop with Windows Vista recovery and dualboot again. My initial plan was to partition 100 gb to ubuntu, but it was only allowing me to partition 30 gb. It’s enough though. Now i’ve tried almost everything and nothing, so far, has worked. Now im down to the last alternative installation option – copy it from the Windows partition.
Question: Can i copy the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King folder from inside Ubuntu, or do i need to use some sort of external harddisc? Leave a comment
